ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Tamil was established in 2011 to offer Tamil literature course to the rural students of Pappireddipatti which comprises of more than 90 villages. In the period of ten years, the department has well grown to offer Post Graduation from 2017 onwards and also full time Doctor of Philosophy from the current year 2021. Currently, the department can accommodate 75 Under graduate students, 45 Post graduate students per year and also 4 research scholars to pursue full time Ph.D in Tamil. The department is actively leaded by the Head of the Department Dr. P. SenthilKumar supported by Dr.A.Subha, Dr.E. Sujitha and a team of highly qualified eight guest lecturers’ who possess NET, SET and Ph.D’s.

To sharpen the oratorical skills of students, “Padaipparangam” was inaugurated on 21.12.2018 under the name of eminent Tamil Scholar Kee.Aa.Pe.Vishwanatham. In addition to academic teaching, at regular intervals, students are motivated to participate in elocution, poem writing, essay writing, book reviews and other literary activities. More than 50 Padaipparangams were conducted till now and more than 300 students had proven their talented skills and performance. Introduction of more than 100 books of popular writers such as Jeyakaanthan, Jeyamohan, S.Ramakrishnan, Vaikkom Mohammed Basheer, Nanjil Naadan, S. Balamurugan,Shoba Sakthi,Kanmani gunasekaran, Shylaja, Imayam, Vennila, Ambai, Bama were done by students, thereby promoting reading habits of modern Tamil literature. Famous Tamil literary personalities like Sahitya Academy recipient writer Nanjil Naadan, writer and story teller Bava Chelladurai and many more were invited to offer their valuable inputs to the department students.

Special attention and coaching has been given to Post graduate students to qualify UGC- NET and SET. As Tamil language serves as prominent paper in TNPSC exams, special lecture programs to cover TNPSC syllabus are conducted regularly to make students to strengthen their knowledge in competitive exams.

The department strives its efficiency in continuously conducting seminars and conferences to enrich the tamil knowledge in Tamil literature In 2020, the department organized in Seven days international seminar titled “Tamil Ilakiya Vagamaigalil Sitrielakkiyangal”. On 05.10.2020, the department conducted One day National seminar titled, “Samakaala Tamil Ilakkiya Padaippugal”. About 300 and 100 participants all over the world had actively participated respectively and made it a grand gala event. The department has got an exclusive library which holds more than 600 books for the reading requirements of faculty and students.
